Our Engagement Story

Christmas Dance 1996

How We Met
Kris and I met at a dance at Peru High School in 1994. I went for fun with one of my female friends and her date. Another one of my friends brought Kris as a date for the dance. While she and yet another girl fought over who was going to dance with him, he and I had a great time at the dance the rest of the evening. Yeah...I was a sneak at the time. I was a freshman, and Kris was in his sophomore year, and we've been together since then! The picture was taken in 1996 for our high school's Christmas dance.

Proposal Story
To truly appreciate our engagement story, I have to give you some background information. Seemingly every time we drove from Lafayette back to Kris' old apartment, we would be stopped by the same red light at the intersection of Main Street and Kossuth Street. At that point, either Kris would bow down and kiss me or I would reach up and kiss him each time we were stopped. We started calling it "our" stoplight and would time it perfectly to reach just as it was turning red.

After dating for over seven years, Kris proposed on December 21, 2001 approximately 7:30 in the evening. I had drove to Lafayette to pick Kris up to take him to Peru for the holidays. Kris and I went out for dinner. In his car on the way back to his apartment, he had the soundtrack from "Moulin Rouge" playing. When we reached the stoplight at Main Street and Kossuth Street, "Come What May" was playing. Kris reached in his coat pocket and pulled out a little black box. He asked me if I would marry him. I was completely surprised and shocked. First, I asked if he was serious, then said "Yes". I teared up a bit, and gave him a big hug and kiss. All that happened in the time span of one red light! We decided to have a longer engagement, 18 months, to allow for plenty of time for planning and for getting settled into our new home, and to be able to have a June wedding.

The Ring
Engagement Ring
To the right is a picture of the engagement ring that Kris gave me. The picture doesn't do it justice. Its a .6 carat marquis-cut solitaire. He picked it out by himself after we went ring shopping once. I just love it!
